Fix a Logic Pro problem
Start with the symptom, not a reinstall
Most Logic Pro problems come from one setting, one plug-in or one device, and a reinstall changes none of those. Pick the symptom that matches what you see and go straight to that page. Each one opens with a symptom table, then an ordered diagnosis list, then the fixes with Apple's exact menu paths.
- A "System Overload" alert stops playback or recording. Go to Logic Pro system overload. First check: the I/O Buffer Size in
Logic Pro > Settings > Audio > Devices. - Logic Pro quits unexpectedly or never finishes opening. Go to Logic Pro crashing or not opening. First check: relaunch while holding Control and choose Launch Without Audio Units.
- The meters move but you hear nothing, or nothing moves at all. Go to Logic Pro no sound. First check: the Output Device in
Logic Pro > Settings > Audio > Devices. - You hear what you play a beat late. Go to Logic Pro latency. First check: the I/O Buffer Size and whether Software Monitoring is on.
- A plug-in you installed is not in the slot menu. Go to Logic Pro plug-ins not showing. First check:
Logic Pro > Settings > Plug-in Manager.
All five pages were checked against Apple Support documentation on 3 November 2026 and apply to Logic Pro 12 on macOS 15.6 or later. On macOS 12 or earlier the Settings menu is called Preferences.

Before you open a fix page
The 5-minute first checks for any Logic problem
Apple's own troubleshooting article for Logic Pro starts with the same four moves whatever the symptom, and they take less time than a reinstall download. Do them in this order:
- Restart the Mac from the Apple menu. This clears a stuck Core Audio driver and any plug-in that has hung in the background.
- Update Logic Pro from the App Store (Apple menu > App Store > Updates). Apple fixes crash bugs in point releases, and the fix pages here assume the current version.
- Unplug external audio and MIDI devices one at a time and test again. If the problem goes away, the device or its driver is the cause, and the manufacturer's site is the next stop.
- Relaunch holding Control and choose Launch Without Audio Units. If Logic now behaves, a third-party plug-in is the cause. Apple documents this startup key on its startup modifier keys page.
If all four pass and the problem is still there, it is almost certainly a setting or the project itself, and the relevant fix page walks through those.
When a reinstall actually helps, and how to do it safely
A reinstall replaces the application bundle and nothing else. It helps when the app itself is damaged: Logic Pro fails to launch at all after a macOS update, the App Store shows it as needing repair, or you see missing-file errors inside Logic's own menus. It does not help with overloads, latency, missing third-party plug-ins or a single project that crashes, because none of those live inside the app bundle.
According to Apple Support, the safe sequence is: back up your projects and your current copy of Logic Pro first; in the Finder choose Go > Applications and drag Logic Pro to the Trash; then reinstall from the Mac App Store, or restore the app from a Time Machine backup. Projects, the Sound Library, presets and patches are stored outside the app bundle, so they stay in place. Reinstalling is the last step in Apple's troubleshooting order, not the first. Where Logic stores preferences and crash logs
Two folders matter when a fix page asks you to reset or inspect something. Both are in your user Library, which the Finder hides; hold Option and choose Go > Library to reach it, or use Go > Go to Folder with the path.
| What | Path | Why you would touch it |
|---|---|---|
| Logic Pro settings (one-time purchase version) | ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic10.plist | Apple's reset step: move it into a new folder to rebuild default settings |
| Logic Pro settings (Apple Creator Studio version) | ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobilelogic (as named by Apple Support) | Same reset step for the subscription build |
| Control surface settings | ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.logic.pro.cs | Reset when a controller misbehaves |
| Audio Units cache | ~/Library/Caches/AudioUnitCache | Clear to force a full plug-in rescan |
| Crash reports | ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (also shown in the Console app under Crash Reports) | The first lines of a report name the crashing plug-in or framework |
| Third-party Audio Units | /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components | Move a suspect plug-in out to test without it |
Before you reset settings, open Logic Pro > Settings and note anything you customized, and export key commands from the Key Commands window. Apple's preferred first step is the in-app option Reset All Settings Except Key Commands, which leaves projects, presets and patches untouched.
FAQ
Should I reinstall Logic Pro when it keeps crashing?
Not first. Apple's troubleshooting order puts a restart, an update, launching without Audio Units and resetting settings ahead of a reinstall, because crashes are usually caused by a plug-in, a device or a project rather than the app bundle.
Do these fixes apply to Logic Pro for iPad?
Partly. The iPad app has no Plug-in Manager, buffer-size menu or preferences file, so the overload, latency and plug-in pages are Mac-only; the no-sound checks for output routing and mute/solo apply on both.
Will resetting Logic Pro settings delete my projects?
No. According to Apple Support, Reset All Settings Except Key Commands changes global settings, Control Bar and track header defaults only; project files, presets and patches are not affected.
