Compare Logic Pro with other DAWs
Which decision are you making?
Most people land here with one of three questions. Pick the one that matches yours.
- Is GarageBand enough, or do I need Logic Pro? You already own a Mac or iPad, GarageBand is free, and you want to know what the US$199.99 upgrade actually buys. Read Logic Pro vs GarageBand.
- Logic Pro or Ableton Live? You make electronic music, perform live, or want a DAW that also runs on Windows. Read Logic Pro vs Ableton Live.
- Logic Pro or FL Studio? You care about the piano roll, pattern-based beat making, and the cost of staying current for years. Read Logic Pro vs FL Studio.
Every comparison on this site uses the same structure: an at-a-glance table, the dimensions that actually separate the two apps, and a verdict broken down by the kind of user you are. Prices and platform support are taken from Apple and vendor pages and dated with a Last checked line.

How we compare DAWs
How to compare DAWs fairly
Headline prices mislead. Compare the cost of owning each app for three years, including paid version upgrades, subscriptions and the bundled sounds you would otherwise have to buy. Logic Pro for Mac is a one-time US$199.99 purchase with free updates, or part of the Apple Creator Studio subscription at US$12.99/month or US$129/year (apple.com/logic-pro). Ableton Live 12 sells in three editions from US$99 to US$749 (ableton.com/shop/live), and FL Studio sells four editions with lifetime free updates (Image-Line shop). Then weigh platform: Logic Pro runs only on Apple silicon Macs and iPads, while Live and FL Studio also run on Windows. Finally, compare workflow for the music you make rather than feature counts. A DAW with 50 instruments you never open is not better than one with 20 you use daily.
Try before deciding
All four apps can be tried at no cost. GarageBand is free on the Mac App Store. Logic Pro comes with 30 free days of Apple Creator Studio for new subscribers; see how the Logic Pro trial works. Ableton offers a free Live 12 trial from its shop page, and Image-Line offers an FL Studio trial that never expires but cannot reopen saved projects until you buy an edition. Spend one evening on the same short idea in each app. Where you finished the idea fastest is usually the right answer.
Moving projects between DAWs
No DAW opens another vendor's native project format. GarageBand is the exception: Logic Pro for Mac opens GarageBand projects directly, though you cannot send a Logic Pro project back to GarageBand (Apple Logic Pro Help). Between Logic Pro, Live and FL Studio, you move work as exported audio stems and Standard MIDI Files. Logic Pro's stem export guide covers the settings that make stems line up in another app: same sample rate, bounce from bar 1, and one file per track. Plan on rebuilding instrument and effect chains, since plug-in presets do not travel unless the same third-party plug-in is installed on both sides.
FAQ
Which DAW is cheapest over three years?
GarageBand is free. Among paid options, Logic Pro at US$199.99 one-time and FL Studio with lifetime free updates both avoid recurring costs; Ableton Live editions range from US$99 to US$749 and major version upgrades are paid. Check each vendor's current page before buying.
Can I run Logic Pro on Windows?
No. Logic Pro runs on Macs with Apple silicon and on iPad. Ableton Live and FL Studio both run on Windows and macOS. See our guide on Logic Pro for Windows alternatives.
Can I open an Ableton or FL Studio project in Logic Pro?
Not directly. Export audio stems and MIDI files from the original app and import them into Logic Pro, then rebuild instruments and effects.
